DHS Expands Work Authorization Extensions for Certain Employment Authorization Document Renewal Applications.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has finalized a rule aimed at bolstering economic growth and easing workforce challenges for U.S. employers. The rule permanently extends the automatic renewal period for Employment Authorization Documents (EADs) from 180 days to 540 days for eligible noncitizens who file timely renewal requests. This change, developed in response to feedback from the business community, provides greater certainty for employers while improving access to work authorization for eligible individuals.

The final rule will become effective on January 13, 2025, and will apply to eligible applicants with timely filed renewal EAD applications pending or filed on or after May 4, 2022.
